Join Dr. Brook Niemiec at VDS Reno this fall for a full day of hands-on labs. We will learn closed extraction techniques in the morning, including elevation, sectioning, and multi-rooted teeth. We will also discuss equipment needs and regional anesthesia. In the afternoon, we will focus on flap creation, buccal bone removal for canine and carnassial teeth, closing oronasal fistulas, and extracting retained roots.

THE LECTURE: Dr. Ward's 2-hour presentation will cover his experience with veterinary professionals, common field challenges, and Cognitive Behavioral Treatment (CBT) strategies. It will address cognitive, emotional, and behavioral issues like self-doubt and time management, offering practical exercises and a hand-out for continued use.
This is NOT a RACE-APPROVED Course.
ABOUT DR. ZACHARY WARD: Dr. Ward is a licensed psychologist with 13 years of experience in veterinary mental health. He runs a private practice in Roseville, California, and has been the Coordinator of Mental Health Services at UC Davis School of Veterinary Medicine since 2014. He has spoken at national conferences and appeared in news interviews and a documentary on veterinary mental health.

"Strategies to Address Stress and Improve Well-Being in Veterinary Medicine."
This 2-hour presentation will begin briefly with an outline of Dr. Ward's professional credentials and experience working with those in the veterinary profession. It will follow with a description of many of the strengths and struggles that those in this field can commonly experience. The presentation will then describe Cognitive Behavioral Treatment and how the strategies within this approach can be used to address many of the struggles outlined in veterinary medicine. Interventions will be outlined for the following topics: Cognitive Change (methods to address self-doubt, excessive criticism, imposter syndrome, and perfectionistic thinking) Emotional Regulation (parasympathetic nervous system interventions, Acceptance and Commitment strategies) and Behavioral Intervention (boundary-setting, effective time-management & goal-setting strategies to reduce procrastination and self-care through exercise, sleep, & nutrition to improve well-being). The presentation will provide opportunities for participants to practice several of these strategies in-vivo, and a hand-out will be provided for participant to use as a take-away to continue to practice these strategies in their daily routine.
About Dr. Zachary Ward
Dr. Ward is a licensed psychologist with 13 years of clinical experience working with those in the veterinary medicine profession. He has a private practice in Roseville, California and has worked as the Coordinator of Mental Health Services to the School of Veterinary Medicine at the University of California, Davis since 2014. He has presented on mental health-related topics at several national conferences and has participated in several news interviews and one documentary film on topics specifically related to mental health in the veterinary medicine field.
