WSAVA Dental Guidelines Published

The World Small Animal Veterinary Dental Guidelines have just been published.  This is the definitive international guide for veterinary dentistry.  This is over 100 pages of the latest information on veterinary dentistry, authored by a conglomeration of world experts led by our own Dr. Niemiec.

Supported by high-quality images, this text is written with the general practitioner (and nurses) in mind.  There are sections on common oral pathology in dogs and cats, including the most recent research on feline stomatitis.  There are also sections on periodontal disease and therapy, including the latest information on new treatment options.   Oral anatomy and physiology are covered in detail with high-quality imaging.  In addition, there are step-by-step guides on extractions, dental radiology, and dental prophylaxis.

A thorough discussion of anaesthesia and analgesia is covered in its own chapter.  While focusing on the gold standard, we also cover situations with limited availability of drugs and technologies.

Further, there are recommendations for instruments for a well-equipped practice.   A complete section is dedicated to the university’s role as well as the utilization of veterinary technicians (nurses).  Last but certainly not least is a section dedicated to the animal welfare concerns associated with dental disease.
